Land Der Berge, Land Am Strome

I recently stumbled across this song, Land Der Berge, Land Am Strome, meaning land of mountains, land by the streams... Its Austria's national anthem. I initially wondered which composer wrote the tune, as Germany's national anthem's tune was originally written by Joseph Haydn.

Apparently, its MOZART!!!! Yep, the musical prodigy born in Vienna, Austria. As usual, his songs are always wonderful and the tune for Austria's anthem is a fitting one. As one hears it, one can imagine the beautiful Austrian scenary..................................................

Internet Explorer 9 Beta

After many complains about Internet Explorer 8 and its ancestors, Microsoft finally decided to release a new version of IE. Its still in Beta mode, and Microsoft claims its faster than its ancestors..

I installed it and tried it out. The interface is totally different, with the ''Back, Forward'' buttons redesigned. At one glance, it looks like a blown up version of Google Chrome..

I've tried it and, to be honest, its just a SLIGHT improvement over IE8. There's still that snail's pace but its just slightly faster........

Oh well, I guess I'll just stick to Firefox and Chrome..

Mozilla Firefox 4 Beta

I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox 4 Beta..... its slightly faster than the previous version and has a more improved GUI.

I compared it against Google Chrome, just to see whether is it faster than Chrome, but Chrome is still faster than Firefox 4 Beta.....

Will be upgrading to Windows 7 soon... just hope I can try out Internet Explorer 9 Beta, which has been released but works only on Windows 7 and Vista.

After 3 years of studying, 1 major hurdle has been met with success and joy. It is with great happiness that I complete the last chinese character on the paper. oh and did I mention the howling of students that engulfed the school?

We have a right to celebrate though....... If the school punishes us for celebrating, they might as well abolish PMR.....

Speaking off abolishing PMR, apparently PMR will be abolished after 2016. Happy to hear that....

Fokker 50- A Legacy, and bringer of good memories.

Recently, MASWings retired its last Fokker 50 aircraft. That makes it the last airline in Malaysia to operate and retire that plane.

To me, I will always remember the Fokker 50 as a sturdy plane that shuttled me back and forth between Kerteh (I was staying in Terengganu when I was small), Kuantan and KL. If I took it to and from KL, the plane would always land at Subang Terminal 3 (now Subang Skypark). As for Kerteh and Kuantan, it would land at Kerteh Airport and Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport respectively.

This particular Fokker used to be my favourite plane when I was small. Live in Kerteh was quite boring, so watching the Pelangi Air Fokkers takeoff and land was quite interesting.

Pelangi Air used to be a regional carrier in Malaysia some time back. Unfortunately, it went bankrupt a few years back and both of its Fokkers were abandoned at Subang Airport and the Johor Airport. Its lack of planes mean that there was a very good chance that I sat on both on Pelangi’s planes. 9M-MEQ and 9M-MER respectively.

The planes was fast. Yup, quite fast but not as fast as the Boeing 737 that MAS was using from Kuantan to Subang. But what makes it nice is that it is very classical, not ultramodern.

Eventually Pelangi’s fares became too expensive and we took MAS from Kuantan instead. I still remember that Pelangi Fokker 50 taxiing out towards the Kuantan runway as we sat in the waiting area for our MAS 737. Little did I know was that it would be the last time I saw a Pelangi Fokker 50 doing its takeoff run.

Pelangi went bankrupt during 2000 (or is it 2001?). I can’t remember the exact date, but the last time I ever saw a Pelangi Fokker 50 was at Subang. We had just arrived on a MAS 737 and waiting for the stairs to exit the plane when all of a sudden, on an impulse, I turned to my right and there, glinting in the late morning sun, was one of Pelangi’s Fokker 50, sitting derelict in the corner.

What saddens me is that nobody bothered to make use of the 2 abandoned Fokkers while it was still functional. Oh well, I guess that as time goes, people eventually forget about those little things that brings back good memories. 9M-MER 9M-MEQ

Marching Competition

The annual Marching Competition among Uniformed Bodies of SMJK Katholik took place yesterday. I was one of the marchers for BSMM. It was my first time, so I was quite nervous.Marching was ok, but when it came to the Formation category we made quite a lot of mistakes which is why we did not ghet anything for formation. But we got 3rd for marching
Next year, my form will be in charge of our team, so we will try to make our juniors better

Back from my Red Crescent Camp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm quite sad that its over, its the best camp yet!!
Guess the camp name? Its NEXUS, which means connection. Teamwork was emphasised so that things could be done quickly and everyone will have a share of work.
Another bad news is that SCHOOL IS REOPENING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to face the scary exam marks and also the teachers especially Sally Tam.

Well I guess I just have to go throught it.

  Recently, fires have been destroying homes across the nation and claiming many lifes, especially children. we have seen the sad news of three siblings that perished in a fire that consumed their home on Wednesday.
  This leads me to think whether our homes are a safe haven as we think they are. Even a disaster happening in your house could be a Grim Reaper, waiting to pounce on the lifes of humans

  First of all, we wonder whether children are well equipped with the knowledge of Save-Yourself-When-Fire-Strikes. A lot of children do not know how to save themselves when there is a fire. Therefore, parents should teach their children the skills mentioned and, if disaster strikes, parents SHOULD save their child, not run out, call for your child and expect them to find their way through a labyrinth of fire.

I just downloaded Google Chrome today. Its faster, way faster than IE(Internet Explorer).

The cao dai believers seem to pay a lot of respect to the three saints- Sun Yat Sen, Victor Hugo and Nguyenh Binh Khiem.

Took a bus down from Dalat to Saigon . Another 7 hour ride. Stopped by for lunch at some restaurant which i cant remember its name. Not much to write............... At night we had dinner, i choose their specialty: Beef vermicelli (pho bo). I even bought Dan Brown's latest book! The Lost Symbol.

Day 3: Vietnam

Still feeling cold. Today we went for a tour to the Zen monastery, Bao Dai Summer Palace, Love Valley, FlowerGarden, Prenn Waterfall , Datangla Waterfall, and embroidery workshop cum gallery.

1.Prenn Waterfall
A very nice waterfall with a lot of slippery rocks. Nearly tripped on one. At the end of the path there was a clown (???) . I accidentally stepped on a loose rock and SPLASH!. Sorry Clownie!

2.Datangla Waterfall
You can take a toboggan down and up. Most will normally walk the 1km down and take the toboggan back up. Well thats what I did, and it was much faster.
Review: Slippery slippery slippery SLIP! One wrong step and you're swimming!

3.Zen Monastery
They have a cable car service that goes up to Robin (or is it Robbie) Hill. Lots of flowers and with a good view over Paradise Lake. Good place for having a Monastery, nice place for meditation.
The cable car was quite small, max capacity is 4 ppl. It also offers a great view over Dalat Town and the surrounding hillside. (Damn they are singing Jingle Bells now as I write!)

4.Emperor Bao Dai's Summer Palace
Due to the cooling environment of Dalat, it is no wonder that His Majesty Emperor Bao Dai chose to build his summer palace here. So whenever it gets all steaming in Hue (the former imperial city), he comes up here.
The palace is built in Art Deco style (does'nt look much like art deco style)

All the artworks in here was created with just a needle and a thread. My favourite was the 'Last Supper' which features Jesus, his disciples eating bread, drinking wine, much like they do at communion.

Lots of 'romantic' stuff here, with 2 snogging statues and flowers. Boring......................

Last stop. As the name suggests, it has lots of flowers, including Lavender. After that, back to hotel!!!!!

Day 2: Vietnam

New day, new place to go. Today we took a bus down to Dalat (lalat?) which is 7 hours from Ho Chi Minh City. Ride was bumpy with lots of HONKING!

As we neared Dalat we could see the country side, just like Switzerland and Cameron Highlands.

Dalat is quite cold, more like Genting than Cameron.

Well, they have a market, a big one.

We boarded at around 2.50 pm, pushback commenced at 2.55 pm. After all that safety announcement, it was time to begin that takeoff roll.

Our ride

As usual, our tiny 737 entered the runway from the third ramp instead of the end. We paused for a while on the tarmac, and suddenly we were thrown backward in our seats as the plane accelerated foward.

Rotate....

Takeoff was quick and the plane lifted into a cloudy Malaysian sky over Sepang. The pilot then made a right bank towards the South China Sea.

Lunch was served 45 mins into the flight. I chose beef noodles. It had egg as well. The egg however, turn out to be the worst I've ever eaten. It didnt even taste nor look like fried egg.

Descent started around 4.20. It was only then I realised that the one major river in Vietnam, the Mekong, split into many channels and makes the whole country look as though it has a 'hand'.

A couple of left turns and we intercepted the localizer.

Final approach

Touchdown was abrupt and full reverst thrust was applied with all spoilers.

We exited via a taxiway, across adjacent runwayand onto the main taxiway.

My first impression of the terminal: Resembles Pudong Terminal 2 (Shanghai)

If you think that you've seen enough of motocycles onMalaysian roads, think again. Here, motorcycles rule the roads, with them creating a motorbike tsunami.

Visited Ben Thanh Market after arriving. Very tired now, wanna go sleep.

Last Day of holiday. :(. We went to Phra Nang beach to enjoy the beach for the last time this year.

After that, we had our lunch and took a taxi to airport.

It rained again while we were waiting for our flight. Why does it have to rain again?

The boat took us into the a lagoon. There were a lot of paya bakau trees. The water was clear, clearer than Batu Ferringghi.

Our transport came at around 8:30am Thai time. We visited Tiger Cave Temple first.

It is actually a kind of temple with cave at ground level but if you want to, you can climb up 1237 steps to the top.

There were lots of monkeys there, ready to become 'animal snatch thieves'.

I climbed all 1237 steps to the top. The view was magnificent. I could see the neiboughring limestone mountains and some small villages. Airport was easy to spot.
There was a pagoda and a giant Buddha at the top.

Hot Springs

We left for the hot springs at Khlong Thom. It is natural, not artificial. You can take a dip in any of the small pools, but not too long, it is not good for the body.

Emerald Pool

Next, we went to the Emerald Pool. The water is full of calcium chloride mineral and thats what gives it its greenish hue.

Elephant Trekking

We went elephant trekking after that. The elephant trekked through a rubber plantation. My brother was so scared that he cried.

After that, we returned to the hotel, it was bath, dinner and finally sleep for me.

Krabi: Day 1

It started off, well, not so good. The flight was delayed half hr....... . And onboard? Two arrogant stewardesses insisted on serving and chit chatting with the passengers who booked the food online. So when they came to us, the food i wanted wasnt available. Poor service...
Approach was quite bumpy. When I tried to take a video, my hand when flying up and down. My insides went topsy turvy. See it for yourself:

Immigration was 'friendly', the officer kept barking "Look at the camera!". Here I was thinking, what camera? Turned out to be the identification cam. So i put on my fiercest face and glared into the camera. Could see she was tough, not afraid at all.

We took a taxi to the hotel. Smiles everywhere, friendliness in the air. But the scene is more like Terengganu kampung roadside with Batu Caves at all corners. Heres a pic:

Today i went bowling with my uncle, dad, aunt and grandaunt . My bowling skills were like, well, half good half bad. First, I got 38, then 53, then 43. Why should it be like that.

Me and my dad went to the Airbase in Subang and watched the US Airforce Thunderbirds and our Malaysian Sukhoi Su-30 MKM.
